Advent Calendar Day 22

Polly’s – Deluxe Edition

The Welsh kings of consistency are always a welcome sight and a 7% ABV, El Dorado IPA is not something that either of us is likely to turn down!

Jack

A noseful of fruity, savoury goodness hits you when you crack open Deluxe Edition, a almost Quaver-like faint scent of cheesiness wafts out of the can. On sipping, pure pineapple on the tip of the tongue. This zips and sizzles for a moment of acidic excitement before being drawn out into a nice, rounded hoppy bitterness.

Perhaps there is a little too much sweetness lingering around to let this one creep up into the echelons of the big hitters, but my word, for a Polly’s, this is astounding – this is not to denigrate that venerated brewery in any way, by the way.

I was pleasantly surprised to open up this colourful lil number from Polly's. I'm a big fan of theirs, first drinking their stuff back when they were Loka Polly before a Scandi drinks company poor spiritedly forced a name change with threat of legal action. Whilst their beers don't always dazzle in the same way as say a Cloudwater big hitter or a Scandinavian impy stout, they absolutely smash it out the park for consistency, drinkability and value for money!!

I'm still unsure of my thoughts on El Dorado although I'm starting to believe it brings a bucketload of almost bubblegum/gummy bear sweetness to the brew. It was the aforementioned flavours, along with pineapple, mango and cantaloupe on the gob but with the slightest hint of savoury, almost cauli cheese, on the finish. Tasty stuff and drank no where near it's punchy 7%.
