Advent Calendar Day 3

Updated: Dec 28, 2020

Left Handed Giant - Blender

On day 3 we tore off the wrapping to reveal 'Blender' a 6.8% fruited sour IPA with blueberry, raspberry, vanilla and almond. A curve-ball to say the least!!

Dan

As the video no-doubt shows, this was certainly unexpected but was also exciting because I hadn't had anything from Bristol-based LHG in yonks and whole point of the calendar was to leave our NEIPA comfort zone behind. To date I hadn't had a sour IPA that won me over and sadly, this was no exception. There was an abundance of raspberry and a floral funk from the Mosaic but not much else for me. The flavour improved as it warmed and I could perhaps detect the faintest hint of blueberry and vanilla. If this was thicker and the adjuncts were dialled up, it may well have been class but then I suppose it wouldn't really have been a sour IPA.

Glad I tried but not for me!

Score - 3.5 (downwards adjusting a generous 3.75 in the heat of the moment!)

I have to agree with Dan on this one, this was a surprise but probably not the surprise I was hoping for. The idea of a sour IPA works in theory for me, I like the idea of layers of flavour and a bit of sour zing to cut through the hops, but this fell flat. I didn't pick up much almond flavour and pretty much no blueberry. There was a hint of raspberry and the merest whiff of vanilla. What about hop flavours from the mosaic? Well, they were minimal too, like the faintest memory of hops, playing across your palate. Interesting idea, I'm pleased to have tried it, but not my thing at all.

Score - 3.5
