I have to say, these sours are starting to grow on me, or should I say this sour really grew on me. I don't know if I'm ready to go over to the tart-side in a massive way, but this was a dreamy little concoction. I had my fears that this was going to be a hideous combination of 5-Alive breakfast juice and battery acid, so I guess I set the bar pretty low for myself.

Things got off to a shaky start on the crack and the pour. On the nose this was very noticeably sour and then it poured very thin, think watered down orange juice levels of viscosity. That, however, is where the negatives pretty much stop.

Let's talk colour for a second, I obviously didn't take a picture of that, that would be far too organised. In lieu of photographic evidence, let me just tell you that the colour is good. I was expecting a sunny yellow but actually this is a very pleasing, deep amber, almost the colour of the filling in a Taiwanese pineapple cake. Which, for something so thin, was an odd juxtaposition, but roll with it, trust me.

Don't sit and stare at the colour too long though, just get this in your mouth. Space Soda IV starts off with a big whack of spiky, juicy well-ripened pineapple (too many adjectives, try it and then tell me), almost the platonic ideal of pineapple flavours. This then gets knocked out by a big punch of grapefruit tartness which seamlessly transforms into the base sourness of the beer.

The sourness, despite what my nose led me to believe, is not overpowering in the slightest it just counterbalances the fruity notes really well. Given the thin body on this - it really is like a soda in that sense - I would say this delivers well above where you would expect. Some sour purists might like to see the tartness ratcheted up a few notches, but for me this was perfect.

We keep getting told that sour beers are a great way to clean your palette, which is a claim I am dubious of in relation to some of the thicker, fruit smoothie style sours, but I can really see that being the case here.
